History

The name Wineport Lodge comes from the townland it’s situated in, a small area three miles north of Athlone - on the shores of Lough Ree on the River Shannon. The association between this peaceful spot on the inner lakes of Lough Ree in the centre of Ireland, and the great tradition of wine drinking goes all the way back to the year 542 A.D. when St. Ciaran’s monks discovered the perfect landing place for their precious cargo of wine barrels from France.

Wineport Lodge started life as a Lakeshore Restaurant, opened in February 1993 by Ray Byrne and Jane English. The original restaurant was substantially upgraded and expanded in 1996 to facilitate meetings and larger groups and the Lodge in its current form opened for residents in March 2002 with 10 rooms. 11 additional bedrooms and suites, as well as the Treatment Rooms were added in September 2005, with a further 8 bedrooms including The Captains Suite and The Harbour Room completed in October 2006.

Since its opening, guests at Wineport Lodge Hotel in Athlone have been arriving by road or water – and over the years the bar & restaurant have become extremely popular with gourmet diners, tourists, corporate clients, the local community, families, golfers and sailors.
