Art and photography take pride of place in Wineport Lodge's restaurant, bar and public areas.
Most recently Ray Byrne & Jane English were delighted to unveil a collection of very unique photography now on permanent display in Wineport Lodge Hotel Athlone, one of the very finest 4 star hotels Ireland has to offer.
Walter Borner’s collection of images taken along the length of the River Shannon over four decades is the definitive pictorial record of nature, people, boating and history in this peaceful and beautiful part of Ireland.
The entire collection runs to 10,000 images, taken by Swiss couple Walter and his wonderful wife Ruth, as they journeyed together through Ireland’s inland waterways. Walter and Ruth were members of Athlone Branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland, and of Lough Ree Yacht Club, and navigated the Shannon for over thirty years. Walter also did some of the German translation and provided photographs for the Shell Guides of the Shannon. Ruth, through her articles in Swiss tourism magazines, promoted Ireland's waterways and various other tourism aspects of Ireland.
Tragedy struck in August 2004 when Walter and Ruth unbelievably both drowned on Lough Ree in a tragic accident on their beloved cruiser Winkelreid. Walter’s ashes were scattered on Lough Ree by a flotilla of his friends and Ruth’s ashes were interred in Switzerland.
Walter was a naturally gifted photographer with an eye for capturing life on the waterways through the 1960’s, ‘70’s, ‘80’s, 90’s & Noughties, and his photographs beautifully portray the changes in life in the Irish Midlands in the latter part of the 20th century.
